June 6, 2012
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Sophomores Carolina Paini and Victoria Babson, and junior Emily McLaughlin each earned first-team Pac-12 All-Academic honors while 12 total Bruins were selected to the Pac-12 All-Academic Team, the most selections that the program has had in its history.
This is the second consecutive year that McLauglin has been named to the All-Academic first team while Babson and Paini earned first-team honors for the first time in their careers. Both Paini and Babson were honored last month by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) with CRCA Scholar-Athlete honors. McLaughlin is a junior communication studies major while Paini is a sophomore pre-political science major. Babson has not yet declared a major.
Three UCLA rowers were also named to the second team in junior Tamar Schaap, sophomore Erin Wenzel and sophomore Deanna Wong. Schaap was previously an honorable mention Pac-12 All-Academic selection back in 2011 while Wong and Wenzel earned the honors for the first time.
In addition, six Bruins received honorable mention accolades. Junior Mia Hamano, senior Ariel Handler, junior Kirstin Snook, junior Mariko Snyder, sophomore Nicole Sung-Jereczek and junior Britta Syverson were all named All-Academic honorable mention. This is the second consecutive year that Handler, Hamano and Snyder have been named Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention while it is the first time for Snook, Sung-Jereczek and Syverson.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
