Stats

Fullerton, Calif. - In a rematch of last year's NCAA Semifinal, the No. 2 ranked UCLA women's soccer team defeated No. 3 Portland, 1-0 in the season opener for both teams Saturday evening at the CSUF FILA Classic held at Fullerton's Titan Stadium.

Bruin forward Mary-Frances Monroe scored the game's only goal in the 31st minute of play, blasting a hard shot from the top of the box to beat Portland goalkeeper Darci Carruthers in the top, right corner of the net. The goal was unassisted.

With Portland trailing late in the second half, Bruin goalkeeper CiCi Peterson made two spectacular saves on excellent Pilot scoring opportunities. With roughly 25 minutes to play, Peterson dove to stop a Lisa Casagrande shot deep in the box and just about a minute later, leaped to punch Christine Sinclair's lofted ball just over the crossbar. Peterson finished with five saves on the evening.

The Bruins are still perfect against the Pilots, leading the all-time series 3-0.

UCLA's final game of the FILA Classic will be against the University of Denver on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Denver was a 1-0 winner over Cal State Fullerton earlier in the day.
