Bruins Down Rutgers, 1-0 in Home Opener
Sept. 4, 2011
LOS ANGELES - The fourth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team was victorious in its 2011 home opener on Sunday, posting a 1-0 victory over Rutgers before 520 fans at the North Athletic Field. The Bruins, who out-shot the Scarlet Knights, 20-4 on the afternoon, scored in the 33rd minute on freshman Megan Oyster's first goal of her collegiate career.
"At this point and time we will take a win any way we can get it," said UCLA head coach B.J. Snow. "With such a young team, we're a work in progress. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves when we don't put the ball in the back of the net. Rutgers is a really good team."
Oyster's strike came at the 32:09 mark after the Bruins were awarded a corner kick. Senior Charney Burk took the kick, bending in a perfect ball into the box. Oyster managed to get her head on it, burying a ball past the out-stretched hands of Rutgers goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins.
"It was surprising to me, but it was an awesome feeling when it went in," said Oyster. "It was the game winner too so it was a great feeling."
Freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland had another strong outing in goal, picking up her third win of the season. She finished the match with four saves.
UCLA (4-0-1) continues its three-match homestand next week, facing SMU on Friday at Drake Stadium beginning at 5:00 p.m.
