LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's soccer program is proud to announce that a total of 11 current and former Bruin players have recently been selected by their countries for national team duty. Nine current and two former players are either already in camp or will be in camp in the coming weeks.
Below is a list of the upcoming camps.
Full National Teams
Sydney Leroux was one of 29 players recently called up by U.S. Women's National Team head coach Pia Sundhage for a nine-day training camp at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The camp, which runs from Jan. 7-15, is in preparation for the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament being held in Vancouver, Canada. from Jan. 19-29. Lauren Cheney is also involved in the camp. All 29 players called up for this camp participated in the USA's December training camp at The HDC.
Two other Bruins who are competing with their country's full national teams are Chelsea Stewart and Rosie White. Stewart is currently in training with the Canadian Women's National Team in California, as it prepares for the upcoming 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Vancouver. White will be in camp with New Zealand in Texas in early February, as the team prepares to take on the U.S. on Feb. 11 in Dallas.
U23s
Junior Zakiya Bywaters and sophomore Jenna Richmond head to Sarasota, Fla. for a training camp with the U.S. Under-23 National Team from Jan. 15-22. Former UCLA All-American Lauren Barnes will also be involved in the camp, which will feature a total of 24 players, mostly born in the years 1989, 1990 and 1991.
U20s
Abby Dahlkemper, Samantha Mewis and Sarah Killion are all currently at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., as U.S. Under-20 head coach Steve Swanson has brought in 30 players for training camp from Jan. 5-19. The U.S. Under-20s are preparing for qualifying for the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup The CONCACAF Qualifying tournament, which will send three countries to the U-20 WWC, will be held from March 1-11 in Panama.
U18s
Bruin goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland is also currently in Chula Vista, Calif., however she is training with the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team, under the guidance of U.S. Soccer Women's Technical Director April Heinrichs. The camp, which goes from Jan. 7-15, is running almost concurrently with the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team event. Heinrichs has called in a total of 24 players for a week of training that will include scrimmages against the Shanghai Women's Football Club of China on Jan. 9 and Jan. 15.
