Bruin Players Head to Europe For National Team Tournaments

UCLA players Chelsea Stewart and Rosie White will participate in the 2013 Cyprus Women's Cup with Canada and New Zealand, respectively, while alumnae Sydney Leroux and Lauren Cheney will join the U.S. Women's National Team at the Algarve Cup in Portugal.
Stewart and White both begin play with their respective national teams on Mar. 6 in Cyprus. The Canadians will open the tournament against Switzerland and will also play Finland on Mar. 8 and the Netherlands on Mar. 11 to round out group play. New Zealand plays Scotland in the tournament opener and also has games scheduled on Mar. 8 vs. Italy and Mar. 11 vs. England.
Stewart, a member of Canada's 2012 Olympic bronze medal team, also played in two games with the Canadians at the Yongchuan Cup in China in January. In 2012 with the Bruins, Stewart played in 20 games with 15 starts and recorded four assists. White also played in the 2012 Olympic Games and played in 20 games with 19 starts for UCLA last season, totaling five goals and three assists.
The U.S. team also begins play on Mar. 6, opening the tournament against Iceland before facing China on Mar. 8 and Sweden on Mar. 11. This is the 18th Algarve Cup for the U.S. team, which has won the tournament a record eight times, including an unprecedented three-straight titles from 2003-05. Leroux and Cheney, 2012 U.S. Olympic gold medalists, were members of last year's Algarve Cup team that placed third.
