Two Bruin Players Earn NSCAA All-America Honors
Nov. 30, 2012
Senior forward Zakiya Bywaters and sophomore defender Abby Dahlkemper have been honored as 2012 NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women All-Americans. Bywaters was named to the first team, while Dahlkemper earned second-team acclaim.
Bywaters, who hails from Las Vegas, Nev., started 21 of 23 games this season and led the Pac-12 in scoring with 15 goals, 34 points and six game-winning goals. She has been racking up the honors all season as the Pac-12 Player of the Year, a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist (Vote for her here), first-team selection on Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Season, and a first-team All-Pac-12 selection for the second consecutive year. She was twice named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and the Soccer America National Player of the Week in mid-September. This is Bywaters' first All-America honor.
Dahlkemper, a Menlo Park, Calif. native, started all 23 games for the Bruins and ranked second on the team in minutes played, playing in 2,016 of a possible 2,120 minutes. Dahlkemper was on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors for the second consecutive year. She led a Bruin defense that posted 14 shutouts in 23 games and held a Pac-12-leading goals against average of 0.55. She was also a strong contributor offensively, recording three goals, including two game-winners, and adding three assists. Dahlkemper was a third-team All-America selection a year ago as a freshman.
UCLA women's soccer has now produced 30 NSCAA All-Americans in its history. Bywaters is the Bruins' 14th first-team honoree.
