1998 Pac-10 Conference Results
The Pacific-10 Conference continues to live up to its billing as the "Conference of Champions." The league led the nation in NCAA Team Championships for the second consecutive year with 11 and also laid claim to 45 individual titles. Six different Pac-10 members won at least one NCAA title. Pac-10 members have now won an incredible 25 NCAA team crowns the past two seasons and 41 over the past four years. Those 41 titles have been earned in 18 different sports.
Pac-10 members have won 232 NCAA men's team championships (far ahead of the 151 claimed by the Big Ten) and 61 women's crowns (far ahead of the Southeastern Conference, which has 41) to lead all conferences in both categories.
Men's NCAA team titles have come at a phenomenal rate - 15 basketball titles by five schools (more than any other conference), 35 of the last 38 in tennis, 22 of the last 29 in volleyball, 24 of the last 29 in water polo, 17 of the last 32 in baseball, 19 of the last 34 in swimming & diving and 18 of the last 38 in track and field (44 overall). The Conference has also claimed an incredible 991 NCAA individual crowns.
On the women's side, the story is the same. The NCAA has been conducting women's championships for 17 years and Pac-10 members have won four team titles in a single year on 11 occasions, including eight in 1996-97 and four last year. Included in the NCAA team titles are 12 of 17 championships in softball (plus one vacated), 11 of 17 in tennis, six of the last eight volleyball titles and eight of the last 10 trophies in both golf and swimming. Additionally, the 298 individual titles lead all leagues.
