#19 UCLA Beats Wright State in Rain-Shortened Affair
Feb. 8, 2013
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Ally Carda struck out eight in five innings of one-hit, shutout ball, and also scored the game's only run, as the 19th-ranked Bruins defeated Wright State 1-0 in a rain-shortened contest on Friday at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium. UCLA's second game of the evening against #17 Texas A&M was canceled due to unplayable field conditions.
Carda allowed only a hit, a walk and a hit by pitch over her five innings. She struck out the side in the fourth, two in the first and one in the second, third and fifth frames. The sophomore had 1-2-3 innings in the third and fifth.
In the bottom of the first, Carda led off by grounding a shot to shortstop, which Wright State's Becka Peterson was unable to backhand. As the ball scooted into the outfield, Carda took second base. Two outs later, she was still at second with sophomore Stephany LaRosa at the plate. On a 2-1 pitch, a wild throw by the Raiders' Krystian DeWitt went to the backstop and bounced toward the UCLA third-base dugout. Not only did Carda reach third, but she alertly ran home to beat the throw to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bruins had a rally going before the rains halted the game. Carda led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by freshman Allexis Bennett, moved to third on a single to left by senior B.B. Bates and scored on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of LaRosa. But sustained showers wiped away the bottom of the fifth inning, with the score reverting to through the top of the fifth to mark an official game.
With better weather in the forecast for Saturday, the Bruins return to the field to face McNeese State at 4:30 p.m. and Wright State at 7 p.m. Gametracker and live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com, as well as live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
