Seventh-Inning Homers Propel #8 UCLA to Win Over UCF
Feb. 18, 2012
SAN DIEGO - Junior B.B. Bates and senior Samantha Camuso hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the top of the seventh inning, as the eighth-ranked Bruins defeated UCF 3-1 on Saturday at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
The Bruins remain perfect with an 8-0 record, while the Knights fall to 4-3.
Six different Bruins had at least one hit, as senior Katie Schroeder recorded two. Sophomore Jessica Hall picked up the win in relief, her third of the season, going three scoreless with four strikeouts and one hit allowed. Freshman Ally Carda started and went four, striking out five and giving up a run, two hits and two walks.
The game was a pitcher's duel between Carda and UCF's Mackenzie Audas to start, as both threw three scoreless innings. Carda fanned one in the first and second and two in the third, while Audas had two punchouts in the first and one in the third.
In the bottom of the third, the Knights recorded their first hit on a two-out single up the middle by Kahley Novak. Danielle Brewer then lifted a deep fly ball to right, with the wind blowing out that way, as Bates ranged to her left and made a running catch just in front of the warning track.
In the top of the fourth, the Bruins got on the board. Senior Andrea Harrison led off with a double to left, and one out later, scored on a double down the left-field line by freshman Stephany LaRosa to make it 1-0.
UCF tied the score in the bottom of the fourth, as Farrah Sullivan homered to straightaway center with two outs.
The Knights had a great chance to take their first lead in the bottom of the sixth with runners at the corners and one out. Sullivan grounded a ball to first for the second out, as Natalie Land took off from third, but the throw from Carda, now playing first base, to senior Dani Yudin behind the plate nailed Land to end the inning.
After eight straight fly ball outs for the Bruins, they hit consecutive shots that finally landed over the fence. Bates hit the first pitch of the top of the seventh off the scoreboard in right field, her first homer of the season, to make it 2-1. Two pitches later, Camuso jacked one into the street back of right-center field, her third bomb of the year, to make it 3-1.
Hall had a pair of 1-2-3 innings, including the seventh when she struck out a pair.
The Bruins play twice on Sunday at the SDSU Softball Stadium, facing UC Santa Barbara at 11:30 a.m. and San Diego State at 2 p.m.. Gametracker will be available for both contests at UCLABruins.com.
