13th-Ranked Bruins Blank #4 Tennessee
Feb. 22, 2013
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Sophomore Ally Carda and freshman Paige McDuffee combined on a two-hit shutout of the nation's fourth-ranked team, as a pair of first-inning runs held up for #13 UCLA, which defeated Tennessee 2-0 on Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Carda improved to 6-0 on the season, striking out six in five spotless innings. She only allowed leadoff singles in the second and fourth and a one-out walk in the third. The sophomore posted 1-2-3 innings in the first and fifth, striking out the side in the fifth frame. McDuffee pitched a pair of scoreless innings of relief for her first-career save. She struck out two in the sixth and one in the seventh, retiring the side in order in the final inning and only allowing a one-out walk in the sixth.
The only offense the Bruins (9-1) needed came in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Gracie Goulder led off with a walk and scored on a double down the left-field line off the bat of sophomore Stephany LaRosa. Senior B.B. Bates then chopped a ball to first baseman Cheyanne Tarango, who was unable to backhand it, as it ricocheted into shallow right. LaRosa rounded third on the bobble and came home to score to make it 2-0.
The defensive play of the game came in the top of the second. With one out and one on, Melissa Brown sent a ball to right-center field, but freshman Allexis Bennett came flying in to make a diving catch to keep the Lady Vols (12-2) off the scoreboard. Both teams had two hits. The only other hit for the Bruins was a one-out single from freshman Brittany Moeai in the second.
The Bruins are back in action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Saturday when they face Maryland at 12 p.m. and Oklahoma State at 2:30 p.m. Gametracker will be available at UCLABruins.com, as well as live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
