March 1, 2002
LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA softball team (20-2) posted a doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday afternoon with game scores of 9-1 and 8-0. Sophomore Keira Goerl pitched her third no-hitter of the season in the nightcap. Both games ended after five innings. In earlier action at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament Sponsored by Easton, Purdue swept Florida in the day's first doubleheader.
The Bruins were the visiting team in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader, and wasted no time in posting offense, as lead-off hitter Natasha Watley singled, stole second, advanced to third on Claire Sua's single, and scored on a fielders choice hit by Stacey Nuveman.
In the third inning, the Bruins posted three unearned runs, the final two scoring on the first home run of the year by sophomore Stephanie Ramos. UCLA batted around in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on seven hits. The Islanders scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading the bases with two singles and a walk, as pinch-runner Rachel Kitchens scored on a ground-out by Megan Rathkamp. Amanda Freed earned the pitching victory for UCLA, improving to 9-1 on the season.
Game two of the doubleheader featured a seven-strikeout, one-walk no-hitter by sophomore Keira Goerl, her third no-hitter of the season and the 81st no-hitter in UCLA history. Five of Goerl's strikeouts came in the game's first two innings, and her lone walk was to the third batter of the first inning.
Offensively, Watley again started the Bruins offensively, this time with a double down the left field line, and scored the first of UCLA's two runs in the inning. The Bruins added one more run in the second, the exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Purdue and Florida opened the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Friday morning, with Purdue taking both games of the doubleheader. The Boilermakers won game one by a 2-1 margin before posting a six-inning run-rule win in game two.
