AC3 What? Carda Helps #12 UCLA Knock Off North Dakota State
March 12, 2013
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Ally Carda recorded career highs with two homers and five RBI, going 3-for-3 at the plate, while also striking out seven in five innings, as the 12th-ranked Bruins defeated North Dakota State 7-1 on Tuesday at Easton Stadium.
Carda moved to 14-2 on the season, fanning a pair in the first, second and fifth frames. She allowed an unearned run, four hits and four walks. Junior Jessica Hall tossed two scoreless innings of relief, striking out four and giving up only two walks. She had a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and fanned a pair in each of her frames.
The Bruins (23-4) scored in their first at-bat, as Goulder led off with a single to right, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Carda.
The Bison (10-12) equaled things up on an unearned run in the top of the second. With one out and runners at second and first, Cheyenne Garcia struck out, but reached first on a passed ball by freshman catcher Brittany Moeai to load the bases. Carda then issued a free pass to Logan Moreland to force home Alyssa Reina to even the score at one.
In its half of the second, UCLA rallied with two outs to re-take the lead. Senior Devon Lindvall singled up the middle, advanced to second on a bobble in center by Jenna Isbel and scored on a single to center by freshman Allexis Bennett to make it 2-1. Another two-out run made it 3-1 in the third, as Carda hit her first homer of the day and ninth of the season to center.
In the top of the fifth, Carda escaped a jam, issuing a leadoff walk to Moreland and a single up the middle to Amanda Grable. However, the sophomore buckled down and struck out Jenina Ortega and Alex Sobrero, also retiring Maritza Lopez-Portillo on a foul out to left to end the threat.
The Bruins broke it open with four in the fifth. With one out, Goulder singled to right and senior B.B. Bates walked. Sophomore Stephany LaRosa followed with a single up the middle to plate Goulder with the Bruins' fourth run. Carda then hit her second homer of the day (10th of the year), this time to left, to put UCLA up 7-1.
The Bruins are off from competition for winter quarter finals until next weekend when they begin Pac-12 Conference play at Easton Stadium against #2 Arizona State. The series starts Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m., with the middle game on Saturday, March 23 at 6 p.m. (new time!!!), and wrapping up on Sunday, March 24 at 12 p.m.
