16th-Ranked Bruins Win Slugfest With UC Santa Barbara
March 24, 2012
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior B.B. Bates went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, three runs scored and a home run, while senior Andrea Harrison added three hits, two runs and an RBI, as the 16th-ranked Bruins powered past UC Santa Barbara 10-6 on Saturday at Campus Diamond.
The Bruins improve to 21-6 with the win, while the Gauchos fall to 12-20.
Carda earned the win in relief to move to 10-2 on the year, striking out four and allowing one hit, one run and one walk in 2 1/3 innings. She struck out two in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh. Sophomore Jessica Hall started and fanned three, giving up two unearned runs, four hits and two walks in three innings. Junior Destiny Rodino tossed 1 2/3 frames of relief, striking out one and giving up three runs and three hits, retiring the side in order in the fourth.
UCLA rallied with two outs in the top of the first, as Harrison was hit by a pitch and scored on Bates' sixth home run of the season to right-center to make it 2-0.
The Gauchos tied the score in the bottom of the first. Jessica Soria slapped a single to the 5-6 hole and stole second. Two outs later and with Soria now at third, Keilani Jennings tapped a ball back to the circle, but Hall bobbled it, allowing Soria to score the game's first run, as Jennings moved up to second when sophomore Talee Snow threw away the second attempt to get Jennings. After a walk to Kathryn Pilpil, Lainey DePompa snuck a single through the right side to bring in Jennings and equal the score at two.
The Bruins broke the tie with a run in the third. With one out, freshman Stephany LaRosa was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a double to left-center by Harrison to make it 3-2. UCLA appeared that it would get at least one more run following walks to Bates and Yudin which loaded the bases. Fox lifted a fly ball to center for the second out, as Harrison tagged from third, but Soria threw a rope to the plate to complete an inning-ending double play.
UCLA added two more in the fifth. The Bruins loaded the bases on a double to left by LaRosa, a single to right from Harrison and an infield single to first for Bates. After Yudin grounded into a fielder's choice to second, with Pilpil coming home to force LaRosa, Fox lined a double the opposite way down the right-field line to plate Harrison and Bates to make it 5-2.
The Gauchos came back with four in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, McKenzie Kane reached on an infield single to third. One out later, Kane stole second and scored on a double to right by Jennings to make it 5-3. Pilpil followed with a double up the middle to bring in Jennings to cut the Gauchos' deficit to one and DePompa then homered to center to put the home team up 6-5.
UCLA responded with a five spot in the top of the sixth. The Bruins loaded the bases to start the inning on a Snow double up the middle, a single to left by senior Katie Schroeder and when LaRosa reached on a fielding error by Lauren Boser at first. One out later, Bates rocketed a comebacker off of the pitcher's leg, plating Snow to tie the game at six. Yudin followed with a single up the middle to score Schroeder and LaRosa to make it 8-6. With Bates and Yudin each in motion towards their next base, Soria's throw into the infield scooted into the Gauchos' dugout, awarding Bates home plate and moving Yudin to third. One out later, Carda singled to left to bring in Yudin with the Bruins' 10th run.
The Bruins are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to San Luis Obispo for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Cal Poly. Gametracker, audio and video will be available at UCLABruins.com, in addition to live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
