Comeback Falls Short for 14th-Ranked Bruins Against Oregon State
April 1, 2012
LOS ANGELES - The 14th-ranked Bruins rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the sixth, and down by a pair in their last at-bat had the bases loaded, but Oregon State held on for a 7-5 victory on Sunday at Easton Stadium. Sophomore Kellie Fox went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer, freshman Stephany LaRosa had two hits and freshman Ally Carda drove in a pair on a home run.
The Bruins see their 12-game winning streak snapped to fall to 25-7 on the year and 2-1 in Pac-12 play, while the Beavers improve to 26-10 and 3-3 in league action.
Sophomore Jessica Hall (12-4) went the distance in the circle, striking out seven and allowing seven runs, nine hits and three walks.
After four scoreless innings, including a 1-2-3 frame in the second for Hall and a three-up, three-down on three strikeouts frame in the third, things got crazy in the final three innings. Oregon State scored three times in the fifth. Erin Guzy led off with a single up the middle and was pinch-run for by Madison Bundy, who moved to second on a sacrifice by Ally Kutz and scored on a single up the middle by Lea Cavestany to make it 1-0. After a walk to Ya Garcia, Hall struck out Dani Gilmore on a pitch in the dirt, but the ball scooted towards the backstop. Because first base was occupied, Gilmore was immediately out, but she ran to first and senior Dani Yudin's throw hit her in the back. Cavestany, who moved to third on the wild pitch, came home when the ball ricocheted into foul ground, while Garcia moved to third. Elizabeth Santana followed with a single to right to bring home Garcia with the Beavers' third run.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bruins cut their deficit to one on one swing of the bat. Yudin led off with a walk and pinch-run for by freshman Sam Duran, who came home four pitches later when Fox hit her fourth home run of the season to left to make it 3-2.
After Oregon State stranded runners at third and second in the top of the sixth, the Bruins tied things up in the bottom half. LaRosa led off with a flare single to right, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Andrea Harrison and scored on a single to right by junior B.B. Bates to make it 3-all.
The Beavers rallied with four in the top of the seventh. Garcia led off with a single to center, and one out later, a Santana single to left and a hit by pitch of Desiree Beltran loaded the bases. Paige Hall followed with a double to left-center to bring home Garcia and Santana to make it 5-3. Mary Claire Brenner then singled up the middle to plate Nikki Chandler, who was running for Beltran, and Hall to increase the margin to 7-3.
Those proved to be some big insurance runs, as the Bruins had their own rally in the seventh. With one out, Fox drew a walk and Carda belted her third home run of the season to right-center to make it 7-5. Sophomore Talee Snow followed with a walk, and one out later, LaRosa singled to left. After a wild pitch moved both tying runs into scoring position, Harrison walked to load the bases. But Oregon State pitcher Tina Andreana induced Bates into a fly out to center to end the game.
The Bruins travel to Tempe for a three-game Easter Weekend series against fifth-ranked Arizona State. Game times are 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 12 p.m. on Saturday. Gametracker and free audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
