Arizona State's Bottom of the Order Sinks UCLA
April 5, 2012
TEMPE, Ariz. - The last four hitters in the Arizona State lineup went 7-for-11 with five runs scored, as the fifth-ranked Sun Devils defeated #12 UCLA 9-1 in six innings on Thursday at Farrington Stadium. Senior Katie Schroeder had two of the Bruins' four hits.
The Bruins fall to 25-8 overall and 2-2 in Pac-12 action, while the Sun Devils improve to 33-4 and 5-1 in league play.
Senior Samantha Camuso and sophomore Kellie Fox posted the other two hits for the Bruins. Sophomore Jessica Hall (12-5) struck out two in 5 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs, 10 hits and four walks. Freshman Ally Carda faced one batter in the sixth, allowing a three-run double.
The Sun Devils got things going with three in the bottom of the third. Talor Haro led off with a single to center and Bailey Wigness reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice when Haro was safe at second. After a walk to Katelyn Boyd loaded the bases, Alix Johnson drew a free pass to force home Haro to make it 1-0. Annie Lockwood followed with a single to right to bring in Wigness for ASU's second run. One out later, Haley Steele grounded out to second to plate Boyd to make it 3-0.
Arizona State added another run in the fourth, as Amber Freeman led off with a home run to center to make it 4-0.
After leaving one on base in the second and two in both the third and fourth, the Bruins broke a 24-inning scoreless drought in Tempe with a run in the fifth. Sophomore Talee Snow walked and was pinch-run for by freshman Sam Duran, who moved to second on a single to left by Schroeder and dove in head first to third on a fly out to right off the bat of freshman Stephany LaRosa. Senior Andrea Harrison then lifted a fly ball to the warning track in center, but Elizabeth Caporuscio dropped it, allowing Duran to scamper home with the Bruins' first run. Arizona State would retire the next two batters to strand two more Bruins.
The Sun Devils invoked the mercy rule on the Bruins for the first time this season with five runs in the sixth. Arizona State loaded the bases on a Haro double, a Wigness single and a Boyd walk. Johnson then tapped a ball to second, but Snow's throw home was not in time, as Haro scored ASU's fifth run. One out later, Caporuscio singled up the middle to plate Wigness to make it 6-1. Steele then doubled to center to clear the bases and give the Sun Devils a 9-1 win.
The Bruins are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. against the Sun Devils. Gametracker and free audio will be available at UCLABruins.com, along with live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
