Eight-Run Third Propels #15 UCLA to Win Over Utah
April 21, 2012
LOS ANGELES - Senior Andrea Harrison hit a pair of homers and drove in four, while senior Katie Schroeder, sophomores Talee Snow and Alyssa Tiumalu and freshman Stephany LaRosa also had two-hit games, as the 15th-ranked Bruins defeated Utah 11-8 on Saturday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 32-12 overall and 8-6 in Pac-12 play, while the Utes fall to 23-20 and 0-14 in league action.
Harrison moved into fourth place on UCLA's all-time list with her 51st and 52nd career home runs. LaRosa homered and drove in three, while Snow had two RBI, as six of the Bruin starters had at least one hit. The 1-2-3 hitters in the UCLA lineup were 6-for-9 with eight RBI and three homers.
In the circle, freshman Ally Carda recorded the win to improve to 13-4. She struck out one in four innings, allowing two runs, three hits and two walks. Sophomore Jessica Hall tossed 2 2/3 innings of relief, striking out one and giving up three unearned runs, four hits and one walk.
The Bruins scored twice in the first. Schroeder led off with a single up the middle and came home on LaRosa's 14th homer of the season to left to make it 2-0.
UCLA busted it open with eight in the third. Snow started with a single to left-center and was pinch-run for by freshman Sam Duran, who moved to third when Schroeder's bunt attempt back to the circle was dropped at first by Utah second baseman Jackie Sweet. LaRosa followed with a double to right-center to plate Duran to make it 3-0 and a home run by Harrison to center, her 11th of the year, increased the UCLA lead to 6-0. One out later, senior Dani Yudin and sophomore Kellie Fox drew back-to-back walks. With freshman Tara Mueller running for Yudin, both her and Fox moved up a base on a passed ball, and Tiumalu then singled to left to plate Mueller to make it 7-0. After a Carda walk loaded the bases, Snow singled up the middle to bring home Fox and Tiumalu for runs eight and nine. Carda would be retired between third and home on a rundown, but Snow alertly took third on the play and came home on Schroeder's double to left-center to make it 10-0.
Utah began chipping away with two in the fourth. With one out, Marissa Mendenhall walked, Sweet doubled, and one out later, Whitney Holm singled up the middle to bring in both runners to make it 10-2.
The Bruins got one of the runs back in the fourth on a leadoff homer by Harrison to right-center, her 12th of the season and second of the game, to make it 11-2.
Utah made things interesting with three in both the fifth and sixth, but still fell three short. In the fifth, back-to-back singles for Kelsi Hoopiiaina and Tia Palauni brought up Katelyn Elliott, who homered to left-center to cut the Utes' deficit to 11-5. In the sixth, Utah had second and first with one out, but Chalese Fankhauser reached on an error by LaRosa at third, allowing Holm to score, as Joni Cook took third on the play and Fankhauser moved to second. One out later, Palauni singled down the right-field line to bring home a pair to make it 11-8.
