14th-Ranked Bruins Drop Decision to #1 California
April 28, 2012
BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore Jessica Hall struck out double figures for the second consecutive game, while freshman Stephany LaRosa had a pair of hits, but the 14th-ranked Bruins lost to #1 California 8-0 in six innings on Saturday at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bruins fall to 33-14 overall and 9-8 in Pac-12 play, while the Golden Bears improve to 44-3 and 15-2 in league action.
Hall (16-9) fanned 10, one shy of her career high, which was equaled on Friday. The sophomore struck out the side in the first and third innings and a pair in the fourth. She allowed seven runs (three earned), seven hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings. Freshman Ally Carda tossed 1 1/3 frames of relief, striking out two and giving up a run, a hit and a walk.
The Bruins had plenty of chances, but could not get on the scoreboard for the second game in a row. UCLA had two hits in the first, but stranded both runners. In the second and third, respectively, the Bruins had a one-out walk by Carda and a leadoff single by sophomore Talee Snow, but both players were erased on 4-6-3 double plays to end the threats.
Cal broke through with an unearned run in the third. Frani Echavarria led off with a double to center, moved to third on a bunt single to third by Jamia Reid and scored on a throwing error by LaRosa, who was trying to get Reid at first.
UCLA had another opportunity in the fourth after a leadoff single by senior Andrea Harrison and a one-out walk for senior Dani Yudin, but could not drive home a run. In the fifth, sophomore Alyssa Tiumalu led off with a single, but a strikeout and a line out double play ended the inning.
The Golden Bears broke it open with five in their half of the fifth. Reid doubled down the left-field line to open the inning. One out later and after a Valerie Arioto walk, Jace Williams doubled to left-center to plate Reid to make it 2-0. Following a walk to Danielle Henderson that loaded the bases, Cheyenne Cordes tapped a ball to third, but LaRosa's throw was dropped by Tiumalu at the plate, allowing Arioto to score Cal's third run. Jolene Henderson then singled up the middle to bring in Williams and her younger sister to make it 5-0. One out later, a passed ball brought home Cordes, and by time the ball got under the Bruins' control, Henderson scored from second to make it 7-0.
After the Bruins left two more in the sixth, the Golden Bears won it by mercy rule in their half of the inning. Breana Kostreba reached on a sun-aided double to open the frame and was pinch-run for by Ashley Decker. After Arioto was hit by a pitch, both Decker and Arioto moved into scoring position on a ground out. One out later, Carda uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Decker to score Cal's eighth run.
The Bruins finish their weekend series in Berkeley on Sunday at 12 p.m. Gametracker will be available at UCLABruins.com, as well as live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
