Feb. 27, 1998
Long Beach, Calif - UCLA Senior breaststroker Lindsay Etter tied a Pac-10 meet record with a time of 1:01.28 in the 100 breaststroke Friday, as No. 17 UCLA moved into fourth place after day two of competition at the 1998 Pacific-10 Women's Swimming Championships at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif.
A Pac-10 Champion in the 100 breaststroke a year ago, Etter successfully defended her title as her time equaled USC's Kristin Quance, who set the record of 1:01.28 back in 1994. UCLA's Amber Wines and Beth Goodwin were two other Bruins that performed well Friday as both qualified for NCAA's this March in Minneapolis. Wines took third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.13 and Beth Goodwin took third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.66 as the Bruins moved past Cal for fourth place in the team standings.
Stanford, the only Pac-10 Champion in the 11-year history of the event, heads into the third and final day of competition in first place with a score of 920.5, some 50 points higher than second-place USC. Cardinal Catherine Fox, after first place showings in the 50 free, 200 free relay and 400 medley relay on day one, notched her fourth and fifth Pac-10 titles of the championships Friday, as the sophomore won the 100 backstroke and joined teammates Gabrielle Rose, Misty Hyman and Lauren Thies to win the 800 freestyle relay.
No. 4 USC maintained its second-place standing as Women of Troy divers took first and second on the 3-meter board at the diving championships in Tempe, Ariz. Dorte Linder won the 3-meter with a score of 540.15 and Natasha Chikina placed second with a 478.35. Jean Todisco was USC's top swimmer on the day as she took second in the 400 individual medley after posting a time of 4:14.81, behind Pac-10 Champion Elli Overton of Cal, who notched a 4:11.68.
Other Pac-10 Champions on the day included Stanford's Misty Hyman in the 100 butterfly (53.35) and Arizona's Lindsay Farella in the 200 free (1:47.41).
Competition concludes tomorrow with the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay. Preliminaries are from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and finals begin at 6:00 p.m. All races are held at the Belmont Plaza Pool off of Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach.
