LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's swimming and diving team captured 12
of 15 events in its season opener Friday en route to a 188-94 victory
over the University of San Diego at the UCLA Men's Gym Pool.
UCLA's All-American 200 medley relay team of Jill Jenkins, Lindsay
Etter, Jackie Castellano and Keiko Price set the tone with a first place
time of 1:48.25 in the first heat of the afternoon. Jenkins, who along
with her top finish in the 200 medley relay, also captured the 100
freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, proved she is fully
recovered from a back injury that forced her to miss a large part of
last season. World University Games competitors Price and Etter
individually won four events for UCLA, Etter the 100 and 200
breaststroke and Price the 50 and 200 freestyle.
Senior All-American Cindy Bertelink enjoyed a solid performance as she
won the 1000 free with a time of 10:23.43, nearly 20 seconds ahead of
USD's second-place time of 10:42.59. In addition to her first-place
finish in the 1000, Bertelink also placed second in the 200 fly with a
time of 2:08.69.
The Toreros were led by sophomore Courtney Coleman, who took home all of
USD's first-place finishes. Coleman notched first-place times in the 200
butterfly (2:06.51), 500 freestyle (5:05.05) and the 400 individual
medley (4:28.08).
The Bruins improve to 1-0 overall; 0-0 in the Pac-10, while the Toreros
fall to 0-1 overall and 0-0 in the Pacific Coast Conference.
Next up for UCLA will be UC Santa Barbara on Friday, November 7 in Santa
Barbara, Calif. The Bruins return home on Friday, January 30 to take on
