Get to know senior swimmer Dani Milligan as she answers questions for UCLABruins.com.
What has been your favorite memory during your time at UCLA?
My favorite memory during my time at UCLA would definitely have to be swimming against USC my sophomore year. We got to the meet and it started pouring rain and hailing, obviously not the best conditions to swim against your cross-town rivals in! Each and every girl stepped up on the blocks and swam her heart out while the whole team cheered from the warm down pool and on deck. Our team was so fierce despite the crazy weather, and it made me feel so proud to be a part of the Bruin family.
If you could do another sport at UCLA, what would it be?
If I were not a part of the UCLA Swim and Dive Team (and if I was infinitely more coordinated) I would definitely be a UCLA Gymnast. The gymnasts just won the 2010 NCAA Championships, they train incredibly hard, and are extremely driven but they still find time to wear make-up, have cute ponytails, and bedazzle themselves in glitter!
Do you have a pre-meet ritual? If so, what is it?
In high school I started a pre-race ritual that has stuck throughout my years of swimming. I like to walk up to the block shake my arms, take a few deep breaths and pray. I find it to be the perfect way to get calm and ready to race.
What is your favorite song playing in your IPOD right now?
I could never pick just one favorite song, but the song that gets me most excited to hop in the pool and race is `Pursuit of Happiness' by Kid Cudi.
Who is your hero?
John Wooden is my hero. The way that he strived to live his life in the
image of God is something that I truly look up to. He looked to give each and every minute of his life purpose, drive, and passion and in doing so he became the one of the greatest coaches of all time.
What's your favorite thing to eat?
My parents started taking me at age 3 to our local sushi spot, and I have them to thank for my love of food!
What is your favorite thing to do away from the pool?
Away from the pool my favorite thing to do is spend time with my
family and friends. Hiking, watching movies, playing at the beach, going to nice dinners, shopping, you name it and I like to do it with my family and friends.
What is something most people don't know about you?
Most people do not know that I got started swimming because I watched it on television during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. I was 8 and I begged my parents to put me on a swim team, something that they knew nothing about. Thirteen years later I'm still doing it and
Name a TV show you are embarrassed to watch.
I am embarrassed to say that I watch Say Yes to the Dress on TLC almost every morning after practice.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie of all time is Pride and Prejudice, but I would read the book over watching the movie any day.
What website do you visit most often?
I would be lying if I didn't say Facebook, but shopping websites like
Hautelook.com and Ruelala.com take an easy second-place.
What is your favorite Coach Wooden quote?
Coach Wooden had so many amazing things to say but my favorite quote of his is, 'It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen'. This has proved to be such a helpful quote to me not just in the pool, but in all areas of my life. Coach Wooden taught me to take everything I do one step at time, and I've found that this helps me in my journey to become the best I am capable of becoming.
What does it mean to be a Bruin?
To me being a Bruin means being part of a family that is constantly striving to be the best that they are capable of each and every day. This family is filled with people that take pride in the fact that they are a part of UCLA, and they all fully live up to the statement that once you are a Bruin you are always a Bruin.
