No. 2 Women's Tennis Stays Undefeated
Utah falls victim to Bruin depth, 7-2
Jan. 23, 1998
LOS ANGELES, Calif - The No. 2 ranked UCLA women's tennis team continued its home- opening week with a dual match victory over No. 64 ranked Utah, 7-2, today at UCLA's Sunset Courts. With the victory UCLA improved to 2-0 on the season while Utah dropped to 2-2.
Perhaps the best news of the match was the play of junior Kati Kocsis who took the court in singles for the first time since the NCAA Championships in May. Kocsis registered a 6-1, 6-1 win over Utah's Linda Petersson in the No. 6 position. The bad news for the day came at No. 3 singles, where UCLA rookie Cristina Popescu (ranked No. 71) pulled a muscle in the match and was forced to retire after dropping the first set 7-5 to Utah's senior Linda Englbom. Earning the victory in the No. 1 position for UCLA was sophomore Annica Cooper who improved her overall record to 12-4 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Utah senior Anna Svedenhov, a transfer from Pepperdine who is currently ranked No. 33 in the nation. In the No. 2 position UCLA sophomore co-captain Elizabeth Schmidt (ranked No. 97) used three sets to get by Utah sophomore Megan Payne (ranked No. 105), 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
UCLA senior co-captain Kelly Rudolph turned in the quickest match of the day as she blanked Utah's Rebecca Foulger 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 position. In the No. 5 slot, UCLA's Brandi Freudenberg also turned in a straight set win posting a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Utah freshmen Heidi Thomas. In addition, UCLA junior Alyson Gray claimed an exhibition set, 7-6, from Utah senior Angie Olson on court No. 7.
With Popescu sidelined and the match in hand, the UCLA doubles lineup was adjusted. Rudolph and Freudenberg moved to the No. 1 position and claimed an 8-5 win over Olson and Payne. UCLA's team of Alyson and Shana Gray posted an 8-3 win over Thomas and Petersson in the No. 2 slot and the Bruins defaulted at No. 3 doubles to account for the final 7-2 team score. The Bruins depth proved important again today as injuries to three 1997 All- Americans have Amanda Basica (singles) and Katia Roubanova (doubles) sidelined while Kocsis (singles) made her first competitive singles appearance since last May in today's match.
