Bruins Down Lions, 6-1 at LATC
Feb. 19, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Coming off a pair of losses at last week's ITA National Team Indoors, the eighth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team returned to the win column on Thursday, posting a 6-1 victory over Loyola Marymount at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins move to 6-2 on the year, while LMU remains winless at 0-5.
"This was a great match for us to play outdoors - our first match back (from the Indoors)," said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "Our team came out ready to play and it was great to see our players compete. LMU definitely challenged us at certain positions. It was good for our team to get this win and keep improving with each match."
UCLA began the day by sweeping doubles, eventually earning the point when Carling Seguso and Stephanie Wetmore notched an 8-2 win over Shauna Morgan/Tina Razloznik at court No. 3. Sixth-ranked Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack were also victorious at court No. 1 for the Bruins.
With Schnack and Remynse both out of the singles lineup on Thursday, sophomore Maya Johansson got the nod at court No. 1 for the first time in her Bruin career. She stepped up to the challenge, cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Razloznik. That win that clinched the match for UCLA, as both Anna-Viktoria Lind (court No. 5) and Jordan Dockendorf (court No. 6) posted straight-set wins prior to Johansson's victory.
Ashley Joelson and Wetmore were also victorious on Thursday, taking matches at court Nos. 2 and 4, respectively. LMU's lone point on the day came at court No. 3 where Jane Pringle outlasted Seguso, 6-2, 4-6, (10-7).
UCLA returns to action tomorrow, hosting Hawai'i at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m.
