No. 2 Women's Tennis Survives at No. 7 Cal, 4-3
Feb. 22, 2013
Berkeley, Calif. - The second-ranked UCLA women's tennis team notched a big road win on Friday afternoon, coming from behind to defeat No. 7 Cal, 4-3 at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley. With the win, the Bruins move to 7-1 on the season, while the Golden Bears suffer their third loss of the year and are now 3-3 overall. Friday's match didn't begin well for the Bruins, who were swept in doubles for the first time this season. After Cal notched an 8-5 win at the No. 2 spot, the Bears clinched the point at court No. 1, where Lynn Chi and Anett Schutting downed Bruin sophomores Robin Anderson and Chanelle Van Nugyen, 9-7. Despite the setback in doubles, UCLA actually moved out to a lead in the match by taking three of the first four matches to finish. Straight-set victories by Anderson (court No. 1), Courtney Dolehide (court No. 6) and Catherine Harrison (court No. 5) put the Bruins ahead 3-2. Cal then tied things up when Tayler Davis edged Van Nguyen, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at court No. 4. Bruin freshman Kyle McPhillips would end up clinching the win for UCLA at the No. 3 spot, as she beat Klara Fabikova, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. The win marked McPhillips' 16th of the season, as she is now 5-0 in dual-match play. UCLA returns to action tomorrow, facing Saint Mary's at Noon in Moraga, Calif.
