Women's Tennis Defeats UNLV

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 ranked UCLA women's tennis team defeated No. 37 ranked UNLV, 6-3, today at UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory UCLA improved to 7-5 overall while UNLV evened its record at 3-3.
UCLA claimed four of six singles matches and added two doubles wins for the final margin of victory. Four singles matches were decided in straight sets, with UCLA winning three of those. Annica Cooper improved her record to 10-1 in dual matches as she defeated Susie Kocsis 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Also posting straight-set victories for UCLA were Kelly Rudolph and Brandi Freudenberg. Rudolph won 7-5, 6-2 over Lisa Annebro in the No. 4 position. Freudenberg claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Britta Gabl on court No. 5. UNLV claimed a straight-set win on court No. 6 as Marie Linusson defeated Alyson Gray 6-2, 6-2.
Playing her first match in the No. 2 position, UCLA freshman Cristina Popescu battled back from a 3-6 loss in the first set to claim the match with 6-3, 6-1 wins in the second and third. The closest singles match of the day was on court No. 3, where UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt battled Gee Gee Garvin. Garvin claimed the match 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Schmidt and Garvin were also involved in the tightest doubles match of the day as Schmidt teamed with Katia Roubanova and Garvin with Kocsis on court No. 1. UNLV also prevailed there, posting a 9-7 win. UCLA had already sealed the match with victories on doubles court Nos. 2 and 3.
The homestand concludes on Wednesday for UCLA as the Bruins host Boise State, ranked No. 63, in a 1:30 p.m. match at the Sunset Recreation Courts. Admission to UCLA's home tennis matches is free.
