LOS ANGELES -- The No. 2 ranked UCLA women's tennis team rebounded from yesterday's narrow loss to edge No. 23 ranked University of Arizona, 5-4, today in Tucson. With the victory UCLA improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Pac-10 action while Arizona fell to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.
UCLA won four singles matches then the No. 1 doubles match to secure the important Pac-10 Conference victory.
The Bruins posted straight-set wins on court Nos. 4 and 5 as Kati Kocsis and Brandi Freudenberg claimed victories. In at tight match in the No. 1 position, UCLA's Annica Cooper continued her streak by posting a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Arizona's Vicky Maes. The Bruins' Kelly Rudolph held on for a three-set, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over the Wildcats' Monique Allegre in the No. 3 slot. Arizona won on court Nos. 2 and 6 in three set marathons.
With a 4-2 lead going into doubles action, UCLA only needed one doubles victory to claim the match. Arizona closed the gap with an 8-3 win by Vanessa Abel and Michelle Gough on court No. 3 over Kelly Rudolph and Brandi Freudenberg. The Bruins pulled through in the No. 1 slot as Cristina Popescu and Elizabeth Schmidt won 8-5 over Vicky Maes and Joanna Buczowska. Arizona claimed the No. 2 doubles match to bring the final score to 5-4 for UCLA.
