LOS ANGELES -- The No. 13 ranked UCLA women's tennis team dominated the University of Arizona, sweeping the Pac-10 Conference match 9-0, today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory UCLA improved to 10-5 overall, 4-1 in Pac-10 play while Arizona fell to 6-5 overall, 3-4 in league play.
UCLA made a clean sweep of singles play, winning all six in straight sets to secure the important victory. The first match completed saw UCLA's Kelly Rudolph register a 6-1, 6-0 win over Arizona's Michelle Gough by claiming 12 straight games after dropping the first of the opening set on court No. 4. Court No. 3 finished almost as quickly as UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt sailed to a 6-1, 6-1 win over UA's Monique Allegre.
Identical 6-3, 6-4 scores were posted by Brandi Freudenberg and Cristina Popescu. Freudenberg prevailed over Vanessa Abel on court No. 6, while Popescu, who is playing with a shoulder injury which has restricted her serving, got past Betsy Miringoff in the No. 2 slot. On court No. 5, it was UCLA's Kati Kocsis posting a 7-5, 6-2 win over the Wildcats' Joanna Buczowska. The tightest match of the day took place on court No. 1, where UCLA's Annica Cooper, who is ranked No. 19 in the nation, defeated Arizona's Vicky Maes, who is tied for No. 21, by a score of 7-5, 6-2 in the final singles match completed.
UCLA also claimed a non-scoring exhibition victory on court No. 7 as Alyson Gray defeated Suzanne Zabrodsky 6-2, 6-1.
With the match already wrapped up going into doubles action, Arizona decided to withdraw its No. 1 doubles team and change the remaining doubles lineup. UCLA proceeded to win the two doubles matches played to complete the sweep. The Bruins' No. 3 team of Brandi Freudenberg and Cristina Popescu handled Arizona's Joanna Buczowska and Suzanne Zabrodsky, 8-3. Playing in the No. 2 position, UCLA's Katia Roubanova and Elizabeth Schmidt registered an 8-6 win over Vanessa Abel and Michelle Gough.
UCLA will host Arizona State tomorrow (Sat., Mar. 14) at Noon, also at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Arizona will play at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium at 11:00 a.m.
