Los Angeles - The No. 13 ranked UCLA women's tennis team lost, 8-1, to No. 9 Arizona State University in a Pac-10 Conference match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. The loss is the second of the season for the Bruins to the Sun Devils and brings UCLA's record to 10-6 overall, 4-2 in Pac-10 action. ASU improved to 10-3 overall and 4-3 in league play.
In a total contrast to yesterday's 9-0 sweep by UCLA over Arizona, the Bruins could not pick up a singles victory despite three-set matches on five courts. UCLA took the first set in three of those matches, but ASU rallied successfully in all three cases. The two most competitive and longest matches of the day took place on court Nos. 1 and 6 where UCLA rallied from 6-4 losses in the first set to claim the second on both courts. Unfortunately, the Bruins could not continue the momentum and also lost those matches in the third sets.
The only match decided in straight sets took place on court No. 3 where ASU's Stephanie Lansdorp defeated UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt 6-0, 6-4. ASU also claimed a non-scoring exhibition victory in straight sets on court No. 7 as Faye Devera defeated Alyson Gray 6-1, 6-1.
Preventing the sweep with a victory in the final doubles match completed was UCLA's No. 2 team of Annica Cooper and Kati Kocsis, which defeated ASU's team of Devera and Celena McCoury. In other doubles action, UCLA took an early lead on court No. 1, but ASU's team of Lansdorp and Katy Propstra, currently ranked No. 11 in the nation, recovered to defeat Katia Roubanova and Schmidt, 8-6. ASU's team of Reka Cseresnyers and Karin Palme defeated UCLA's Brandi Freudenberg and Cristina Popescu, 8-4, on court No. 3.
UCLA's eight-match homestand continues next week as Pepperdine comes to the Los Angles Tennis Center for a 1:30 p.m. match on Thurs., Mar. 19. Stanford and Cal come to town April 3 and 4.
Here are today's position-by-position results:
