Bruins Blank Wildcats, 7-0 in Tucson
April 8, 2011
Tucson, Ariz. - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team began its trip to the desert on a good note on Friday, easily dispatching of No. 29 Arizona, 7-0 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Wildcats had only five healthy players available for Friday's contest, meaning that they had to start the match down 0-1 after forfeiting the No. 6 singles position. In addition, they couldn't field a No. 3 doubles team, meaning that UCLA needed just one doubles win to clinch the point. It didn't matter, as UCLA swept doubles play with a pair of 8-2 and 8-1 wins at court Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. UCLA (15-5; 5-1 Pac-10) then cruised to straight-set wins at all five courts. The most impressive win of the day came at court No. 5, where Nina Pantic lost just one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Elizabeth Hammond. That win gave UCLA a 3-0 lead, paving the way for Carling Seguso to clinch the win for the Bruins at court No. 4, where she beat Debora Castany, 6-2, 6-0. Other straight-set winners for UCLA were McCall Jones, Andrea Remynse and Pamela Montez. UCLA heads to Tempe tomorrow and will face Arizona State beginning at Noon.
