Women's Tennis Tops Washington State, 5-4

LOS ANGELES - The No. 16 ranked UCLA womens tennis team defeated No. 62 Washington State by a score of 5-4 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. UCLA improved its record to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in Pac-10 action, while Washington State slipped to 8-9 overall and 2-7 in Pac-10 play.

After claiming victories on the top four singles courts, UCLA clinched the team victory with a 9-8 win in the only doubles match completed. The Bruins paired Kelly Rudolph with Elizabeth Schmidt on court the No. 2 and the tandem defeated Washington States team of Erica Perkins and Andrea Reisz to secure the UCLA victory and allow the other two doubles matches to retire.

In singles play, Schmidt and Rudolph claimed straight set wins on court Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, each stepping up a slot to allow usually UCLA No. 2 singles player Cristina Popescu to rest. Rudolph won 6-1, 6-1 over Andrea Reisz, while Schmidt handled No. 110 ranked Tunde Nagy 6-4, 6-3.

Both of Washington States singles wins came in straight sets. In the No. 5 position, Tamara Filipovic defeated UCLAs Brandi Freudenberg 6-2, 7-5. Playing only her second dual match of the year, UCLAs Becky Rajfer lost to WSUs Moniek van de ven, 6-1, 6-1 on court No. 6.

Two Bruins endured three set matches en route to victories today. Kati Kocsis recovered from a 0-6 loss in the first to win the match 6-3, 6-0 on court No. 4. In the top slot, Annica Cooper held on for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over WSUs Patrycja Gajdzik.

UCLA plays its final home dual match this Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins host the University of Oregon on Sunday, April 12 at 10:00 a.m.
