Van Nguyen Reaches Quarterfinals in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nev. - UCLA sophomore women's tennis player Chanelle Van Nguyen won a pair of matches on Friday to advance to the singles quarterfinals at the Freeman Memorial Championships at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Van Nguyen began her day with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win over Florida's Olivia Janiwicz. She followed it up with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over North Carolina's Zoe De Bruycker in the round of 16.

Freshman Kyle McPhillips also won her opening round singles match, downing North Carolina's Ashley Dai, 6-4, 6-2. McPhillips fell in the next round, however, as UNLV's Lucia Batta pulled off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 upset.

Courtney Dolehide dropped her opening-round singles match 6-3, 6-1 to Stanford's Ellen Tsay, however battled back for a 6-1, 6-0 victory over USC's Valeria Pulido in the consolation draw.

In doubles, defending champions Dolehide and Pamela Montez were 8-5 winners over Florida's Alex Cercone and Brianna Morgan. McPhillips and Van Nguyen lost to North Carolina's Dai and Whitney Kay, 8-6.

Play continues tomorrow and concludes on Sunday.

Four other Bruin players are competing this weekend at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, however results from that tournament were not immediately available.
