Giron, Anderson Advance in New York

Flushing, N.Y. - UCLA's Marcos Giron and Robin Anderson both posted singles victories on Thursday, as play began at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA BIllie Jean King National Tennis Center. Anderson, who is seeded No. 5 in the 32-player singles draw, opened up the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Natalie Beazant of Rice. Next up is a showdown with Northwestern's Kate Turvy on Friday at 11:30 a.m. (EST). Anderson and teammate Pamela Montez didn't fare as well in their opening-round doubles match, suffering a very close 9-8(4) loss to VIrginia's Maci Epstein and Erin Vierra. Anderson and Montez will continue play in the back draw. In men's action in New York, sophomore Marcos Giron advanced to the second round with a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(2) win over Cameron Silverman of Elon College. The fifth-seeded Giron will take on Minnesota's Leandro Toledo on Friday at Noon (EST). Giron's teammate Dennis Mkrtchian nearly pulled off an upset in his first-round match, however he ended up falling to seventh-seeded Nik Scholtz of Mississippi, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
