Bruins On Their Way to Defending Regional Title, Score 36 Points in First Day Action

Northridge, CA - At the conclusion of the first day of competition at the NCAA West Region Championships, the Bruins are on their way to defending their NCAA West Region team titles. After five scored events, the Bruin women have scored 36 points. In today's final events, junior Jessica Cosby won the hammer and sophomore Chelsea Johnson won the pole vault. After prelims on the track, the UCLA women have qualified 10 individuals for tomorrow's running finals. The NCAA West Region Championships will conclude tomorrow, May 29. The first field event, the men's javelin, will begin at 8:30 AM. The first running event, the women's 4x100m relay final, will begin at 3:30 PM.

Finals (Top Five advance to 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 9-12, Austin, TX.) "My goal today was to PR," Cosby said. "I've been throwing at this facility since I was eight years old, so this is like my second home. I was just out there having fun today." Pole Vault - Sophomore Chelsea Johnson, the NCAA Outdoor record-holder (15-0), won the title, with a vault of 13-9.75. Sophomore Jackie Nguyen tied for seventh (12-10). Discus - Freshman Kamaiya Warren placed seventh (167-11). Long Jump - The Bruins qualified junior Candice Baucham, who placed fourth (20-1.75, 0.4) in qualifying. Junior Dana Bethel finished 10th (18-10, 1.7).
Prelims 1500m - The Bruins qualified all three runners. In heat one, sophomore Alejandra Barrientos was second (4:29.05, No. 2 time) and sophomore Allison Hall place fifth (4:29.27, No. 12 time). In heat two, senior Melissa McBain was fourth (4:26.72, No. 7 time). 110m Hurdles - UCLA qualified all three runners. In heat one, senior Sani Roseby placed second (13.34, 1.5, No. 5 time). In heat two, senior Sheena Johnson ran the day's best time (13.11, 0.5) and sophomore Dawn Harper was third (13.28, No. 4 time). 400m - In heat 2, junior Monique Henderson placed first (52.26, No. 2 time), but senior Adia McKinnon did not advance, placing fifth (54.87). 100m - Only nine entries. Prelim cancelled, all entries advance to Saturday's final. 800m - UCLA qualified two runners. In heat one, redshirt freshman Jenna Timinsky placed fifth (2:08.07, No. 8 time) and in heat two, sophomore Ashley Caldwell, the 2004 Pac-10 champion, finished first (2:07.19, No. 2 time). 400m Hurdles - In heat three, senior Sheena Johnson, the defending champion, placed first (57.02, top time of the day).
