Cosby, Perry and Acuff Qualify for World Championship Team

Former Bruins shine on Saturday at the USATF Championships

Jessica Cosby, Amy Acuff and Michelle Perry highlighted the former UCLA Bruins competing at the USATF Senior National Championships on Saturday in Indianapolis, IN as all three qualified for the World Championships in their respective events. The World meet is held in Osaka, Japan in late August.

Acuff won the high jump crown with a leading mark of 6-2.25, while Perry was second in the 100m hurdles in a time of 12.63. Cosby finished third in the hammer throw, earning a spot on the World team with her final throw of the competition (223-9).

Also in the senior portion of the meet, former Bruin Monique Henderson placed fifth in the 400m final, running 50.82. Dawn Harper was eighth in the 100m hurdles final in a time of 13.07. She had the fourth-fastest time in the semifinal round earlier in the day (13.02). The 2004 Olympic Champion in the hurdles, Joanna Hayes, finished 15th in the semifinal round (13.40) and did not advance to the final. Former Bruin Cari Soong finished 12th overall in the hammer with a mark of 209-1.

In the semifinal round of the 400m hurdles, NCAA Champions Sheena Johnson and Nicole Leach continued to excel as both advanced to the finals in that event. Johnson was first in heat three and second overall in a time of 54.94, while Leach had the second fastest time in heat three and the fourth-best mark fo the day (56.00). The final for that event will take place on Sunday.

In Junior action, incoming frosh Shannon Murikami finished seventh in the 1500m, running 4:31.90.
