Last Saturday, the Bruins traveled to Eagle Rock to compete in the Occidental Invitational. This meet served as our last chance to get in a good competition before the Pac-10 Championships. It was an exciting meet and it was great to see so many of my teammates come away with new lifetime-bests!
Ashlea McLaughlin ran a season-best of 52.95 in the 400m and was the top collegiate finisher in that event. She was also named the Pac-10 Track Athlete of the Week for her performance! Joy Eaton also ran a lifetime-best in the 400m with a third-place finish in 53.21. I was inspired to see two of my fellow seniors set new personal records, and I know they both have a lot more in them; can't wait until Pac-10s! Two other senior girls, Lindsay Rowe and Whitney Blue also had big days. Lindsay won the high hurdles with a season-best time of 13.28. Whitney ran a huge lifetime-best in the 5000m, lowering her PR to 17:13.89 to finish sixth overall! On my side of things, I had the opportunity to compete in the steeplechase for the seconnd time this season and the secondnd time since my knee surgery my freshman year. I ran a lifetime-best of 10:57.94 and was the top collegiate finisher in that event. It meant a lot to have my teammates support me and my coaches give me the opportunity to revisit the steeplechase!
Our middle distance crew also had a great showing at Oxy. Four lifetime-bests were run in the 1500m by Rachel Butler (4:37.28), Meghan Marvin (4:39.51), Lauren Hall (4:40.17), and Elle Sanders (4:44.59). These performances were especially great to see, as three of the girls are just freshman, and Lauren is a swimmer-turned-runner who recently joined the team. All of them have come a long way this season and the freshman will have a huge impact on our team in the future.
We leave tomorrow for the Pac-10 Championships in Tuscon, Arizona! It is unbelievable that this will be my last conference championship as a Bruin. Time really does fly. Being a member of this team has meant the world to me, and each of my teammates has the capability to be a champion. This weekend is sure to be an exciting one! Go Bruins!

The loss to USC was definitely disappointing to say the least. We went into the meet with a lot of momentum; from the performance of Ida Storm in the hammer the day before, as well as Saturday's team meeting. Despite the loss, there were definitely some GREAT performances from sweeping the pole vault to Shannon Murakami's amazing performance in the 5000m. The USC meet comes with high expectations on both sides and it didn't disappoint.
After this weekend's meet at Occidental College, we will be heading to Pac-10's. With the breakout performances at the USC dual meet, Pac-10's is sure to be great meet. Hopefully, there will be a lot of improvements in the jumps, throws and running events with Nationals steadily approaching. Pac-10 is a great meet and features excellent competition so I am confident that the women's team will step up and really show all of the effort we have been putting in all year. Be prepared for lots of great performances and a great sense of pride going into this meet. Arizona is already hot, but I have a feeling it's going to get a lot hotter once the Lady Bruins arrive to burn up the track.
