Dec. 10, 1997
LOS ANGELES - UCLA seniors Kara Milling (Poway, Calif.) and Kim Coleman (Newport
Beach, Calif.) were among the elite 12 selected to the All-District VIII Team
announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) today. The pair
led UCLA to an overall record of 17-13 and its 16th NCAA Championship Tournament
appearance.
An opposite hitter, Milling capped a brilliant career with an exceptional senior
season. The Bruins' team captain and go-to player, Milling already claimed First
Team All-Pac-10 honors. She became only the sixth player in UCLA history to
surpass the 1,600 career kill milestone and barely fell short of the 1700 mark,
finishing third on the all-time list with 1691. Her season total of 623 kills is
the third highest single season kill total in UCLA history, just 16 behind all-
time record holder Annett Buckner.
Ranked third in the last regular-season national rankings, Milling finished the
year with a team and Pac-10 Conference best 5.66 kills per game average. She
etched her name on the UCLA single season top-10 list by posting a .302 attack
percentage. Also the team leader in aces with 42, Milling ranks second in the
Pac-10 with an 0.38 per game average. A solid defender, Milling finished just
shy of the 1,000 milestone in career digs and ranks eighth on the UCLA all-time
list with 991. This season she stands third on the squad and ninth in the
conference with a 2.80 digs per game average and 308 total digs.
The Bruins' setter, Coleman also enjoyed an outstanding senior season, already
receiving honorable mention All-Pac-10. She led the nation in assists per game
throughout the year and helped UCLA break the NCAA season record with a final
team assists average of 17.15. Individually, Coleman set a new Pac-10 season
record for Highest Assists Average, finishing with a 14.96 per game average. She
became only the fourth Bruin in history to surpass the 3,000 career assist
milestone and finishes third on the UCLA career chart with exactly 3,400.
Coleman made her mark on the UCLA record books with six elite performances of
70-plus assists, including becoming only the fourth player at UCLA to surpass
the 80-plus assist mark in a single match.
One of the best blocking setters in the nation, Coleman finished second on the
team with 21 solo blocks and third on the squad with 113 total blocks for a 1.03
per game average. She led the team with 341 total digs and ranked third in the
Pac-10 with a 3.10 digs per game average. In addition, her .327 attack
percentage is the highest on the team and eighth in the Pac-10.
The AVCA All-American team will be selected from the 56 players selected to the
eight All-District Teams across the nation and is scheduled to be announced on
Wednesday, Dec. 17.
