Newcomers Shine in Sixth-Ranked Bruins' Sweep of Oregon State

LOS ANGELES - Junior transfer Tabi Love had a team-best 13 kills, freshman Priscilla Duke-Ezeji added a career-best 11 and freshman Zoë Nightingale posted a personal-high 10, as the sixth-ranked Bruins swept Oregon State on Friday at the John Wooden Center. Set scores were 25-14, 25-17, 25-14.
The Bruins improve to 15-3 overall and 8-2 in Pac-12 play, while the Beavers fall to 11-8 and 3-6 in league action.
Love hit a season-best .423 with only two errors in 26 swings, while Duke-Ezeji posted a career-high eight digs. Defensively, senior Lainey Gera had 17 digs and sophomore Kelly Reeves added 10. Senior Lauren Van Orden added 31 assists and five digs and freshman Megan Moenoa came off the bench to record 12 assists. Sophomore Mariana Aquino had five kills and no errors in eight attempts for a .625 hitting percentage, while freshman Karsta Lowe tallied five kills in as many attempts. The Bruins hit a season-best .394 for the match.
The Bruins dropped the first point of the match, but scored the next seven and went on to rout the Beavers in the opener. Duke-Ezeji had four kills during the 7-0 run, Nightingale and Van Orden teamed up for a block and Oregon State committed two errors. The Beavers came back with the next two, but four of five by the Bruins on three kills from Nightingale and a solo stuff from Love made it 11-4. Again Oregon State responded with two in a row, but another 7-0 UCLA run put the set out of reach.
Van Orden had a kill and an ace during the run, Love added two kills and Oregon State made three more errors to put the Bruins on top 18-6. The closest the Beavers would get is nine the rest of the way. Leading 23-14, the Bruins received a kill from Nightingale and then the team-best seventh of the set by Duke-Ezeji to finish off a 25-14 victory. Nightingale posted four kills and two blocks and Gera added nine digs. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers .333 to -.059.
Oregon State had brief leads of 1-0 and 2-1 to start the second set, but the Bruins scored four of the next five on two kills by Aquino, one from Love and a Beaver service error to take a 5-3 lead. UCLA never trailed for the rest of the set. Up 6-4, a 4-1 run on two kills and an ace by Aquino and a Reeves spike made it 10-5.
The Beavers made a game of it, narrowing their deficit to one at 15-14. However, a 4-0 run by UCLA on two kills by Love, one from Aquino and an Oregon State attack error made it 19-14. After a Beaver sideout, a Van Orden kill and two in a row from Lowe increased the advantage to 22-15. Up 23-17, the Bruins got the final two of the set on kills by Duke-Ezeji and Love to win it 25-17. Aquino and Love both had five kills, Duke-Ezeji added four and Lowe posted three. Both teams hit well, as the Bruins hit .679 with 20 kills and only one error in 28 swings, while the Beavers hit .407 (12-1-27).
UCLA led wire-to-wire in set number three to finish off the sweep. Even at one, a 5-0 run thanks to three kills from Love and two by Nightingale put the Bruins up 6-1. Oregon State came back with four of the next five to get to within two at 7-5, but another 5-0 UCLA run put the home squad firmly in charge. Reeves had two kills during the run, Van Orden added an ace and the Beavers had two attack errors.
The Beavers would get no closer than six the rest of the way. Up 17-11, the Bruins got their lead to double figures for the first time on a 4-0 run following two kills from Love, an ace by Gera and a spike by freshman Olivia Okoro. On the Bruins' third match point, sophomore Jenna Scilacci recorded the game-winning kill to complete a 25-14 victory. Love led the Bruins with six kills in the third, while Nightingale added five. Reeves posted eight digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Beavers .237 to .000.
The Bruins continue their four-match homestand on Saturday against #16 Oregon. First serve is at 7 p.m. at the John Wooden Center. A large crowd is expected, so show up early.
