UCLA Women's Volleyball Signs Three to National Letters of Intent
Nov. 14, 2011
Head women's volleyball coach Michael Sealy has announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent. Joining the team in 2012 will be Maddy Klineman (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS), Haley Lawless (Chandler, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) and Rebecca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS).
"This trio, along with another three that will be a part of this class later on, play a huge role in the future of this program. We are filling all the vacated spots that we need and we are adding more raw talent into the stables of people that can compete for starting positions right away," Sealy said.
Maddy Klineman, a 6-2 outside hitter/opposite from Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif., was ranked as the No. 91 Senior Ace by Prep Volleyball. The Mustangs, who are ranked in the Top 20 in California, finished first in the Bay League and advanced to the second round of the Division IAA CIF-Southern Section Championships. Klineman has 257 kills, 33 aces, 168 digs and 13 blocks so far in her senior campaign. Klineman plays club for Mizuno Long Beach.
"Maddy's forte right now is ball control and blocking," Sealy said. "She's a shutdown blocker, she can pass a third of the court and take a lot of pressure off the other passers. She hits with very good range and a high altitude."
Haley Lawless, a 6-3 outside hitter from Seton Catholic High School in Chandler, Ariz., just completed her senior season and won her fourth-consecutive state title. She had 70 kills in 10 sets over four matches on Nov. 4-5 to help the Sentinels to the Division III Championship. In her senior campaign, Lawless had 364 kills, 43 aces, 134 digs and 42 blocks. She was ranked as the No. 21 Senior Ace by Prep Volleyball. Lawless plays with the Club Red team.
"Haley is a very physical outside hitter, who we believe is going to be capable of being a six-rotation player," Sealy said. "She's already a great blocker. She can hit with range and hits from a very high altitude."
Rebecca Strehlow, a 6-0 setter/right side hitter from Wilson High School in Long Beach, Calif., will go from being a Wilson High Bruin to a UCLA Bruin. Her current Bruin team, champions of the Moore League, advanced to the second round of the Division IAA CIF-Southern Section Championships. Strehlow, who has 290 kills, 14 aces, 41 blocks and 158 digs so far this season, was No. 8 on Prep Volleyball's Senior Aces list, the highest ranking for a player from California. Strehlow has also played for the U.S. Junior Beach Volleyball Team, finishing fifth at the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch Junior World Championships. Strehlow plays club with Sports Shack.
"Rebecca is somebody who has been winning championships at the club level playing two age divisions up," Sealy said. "So when she's a 16-year-old, she's a 5-1 setter and wins back-to-back national championships. She's extremely confident, a very accomplished setter and a huge right side blocker."
