No. 3 UCLA Defeats No. 7 San Diego State, 12-8

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 7 San Diego State on Saturday morning, 12-8, in the 2013 season-opener for both teams. The game was the first of four the Bruins will play at the Michigan Invitational.
In the win over the Aztecs, UCLA received three goals each from sophomore attacker Emily Donohoe and freshman attacker Rachel Fattal. Senior attacker Gisselle Naranjo scored twice for the Bruins. Rounding out the scoring with one goal each was senior utility Emily Greenwood, freshman defender Maddy McLaren, junior attacker Kelly Ronimus and freshman defender Alys Williams.
Fattal had the honor of scoring the first goal of the 2013 season, putting UCLA up 1-0 with 5:03 left in the first period. Donohoe scored a power play goal at the 3:44 mark to put the Bruins up 2-0. UCLA extended its lead to 3-0 on another 6-on-5 opportunity, this one by Williams at 3:06. The Aztecs ended the first quarter scoring with a power play goal by Juliana Matos with 1:46 to go.
The Bruins jumped out to a 5-1 lead with a goal by Naranjo (7:02) and a penalty shot by Fattal (6:06). The Aztecs responded with back-to-back goals to make it 5-3. Samantha Voigt scored an exclusion goal at 5:50 and Bailey Wickliffe scored a goal at full strength at 4:21. The Bruins then pushed the lead back to four with goals just 23 seconds apart. Ronimus connected at the 3:18 mark, followed by McLaren with 2:55 to go in the first half. Fattal made it 8-3, completing her hat trick with a power play goal (2:06). The Aztecs closed the gap to 8-5 at halftime.
The third period started like the first two with the Bruins scoring first. Naranjo scored her second of the day to make it 9-5 with 6:19 left. Amber Pezzolla cut the lead to three with a power play goal (5:49). But the Bruins scored got back-to-back scores from Donohoe (1:34 and a penalty shot at :46) to make it 11-6. Matos scored her second of the day at the buzzer to end the third period scoring, and UCLA leading, 11-7.
In the final period, the Bruins once again struck first, this time by Greenwood at the 5:54 mark to put UCLA up 12-7. Matos completed her hat trick to lead SDSU with a power play goal to end the scoring at 12-8 with 3:45 to go.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sami Hill, played all four periods in the cage for the Bruins, making eight saves. Rachel Mitchell was credited with nine saves for San Diego State.
UCLA returns to action against the tournament hosts, No. 11 Michigan, today at 4:00 p.m. (PT)/7:00 p.m. (ET).
