Jan. 29, 2011
LOS ANGELES - Junior KK Clark scored a game-high three goals to lead the No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team past Long Beach State, 11-4, in a non-conference match at Spieker Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Bruins (4-0) led 1-0 after the first quarter but took advantage of Clark's three second-quarter goals to assume a 5-1 cushion at halftime against the visiting 49ers (0-1).
"Our defense looks good," head coach Brandon Brooks said. "And at this point, that's the most important thing for us. We still have a lot to work on, but for where we are at this point in the season, I'm happy with today's effort."
In total, UCLA received goals from eight players. Senior Kelly Easterday was the Bruins' only other multiple-goal scorer, registering two goals. Seniors Megan Burmeister, Priscilla Orozco and Grace Reynolds, sophomores Emily Greenwood and Larissa Todisco and freshman Becca Dorst each added one goal.
Long Beach State had goals from senior Lauren Sieprath, junior Krizia Cerda, sophomore Julie Lantz and freshman Julia Garyfallou.
The Bruins led the entire way, opening the scoring with 5:27 to play in the first quarter on a goal from Burmeister.
In the second quarter, UCLA raced to a 3-0 lead with goals from Clark (6:53) and Easterday (power play at 4:59). Long Beach State reduced the Bruins' margin to 3-1 on a goal from Cerda with 3:47 remaining before halftime. Clark scored twice in the final 64 seconds before the break, handing UCLA a 5-1 lead at intermission.
"It's great to see KK scoring like that," Brooks said. "We're looking for her to be a big contributor this year. The more hard work she puts in, the bigger performances we can expect from her."
UCLA pushed its cushion to seven goals in the third quarter. Priscilla Orozco (6:40), Easterday (5:59) and Reynolds (4:56) each found the back of the cage to hand the Bruins an 8-1 lead. Sieprath's goal for Long Beach State at the 2:20 mark reduced UCLA's margin to 8-2.
The Bruins outscored Long Beach State, 3-2, in the final quarter to win by an 11-4 margin.
Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement totaled 10 saves in the first three quarters, limiting Long Beach State to two goals. Freshman goalkeeper Sami Hill finished with six saves in the fourth quarter, allowing two goals.
Long Beach State goalkeeper Kristen Stragier recorded 12 saves, including eight in the game's first quarter.
UCLA returns to action at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., the weekend of Feb. 5-6. The Bruins will face Hawai'i at 12:30 p.m. and USC at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5. UCLA takes on Indiana at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday and will play one more match on Sunday afternoon.
