No. 3 UCLA Routs Cal Lutheran in Home Opener, 18-3

LOS ANGELES - No. 3 UCLA improved to 12-1 on the year with an 18-3 victory over Cal Lutheran in its 2013 home opener on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Center. Four Bruins scored hat tricks in the game to lead the team. Senior Gisselle Naranjo led the charge with three goals, as did sophomores Emily Donohoe and Danielle Ferraro. Not to be outdone, freshman Alys Williams recorded three goals on the day.
In the win over the Regals (0-1), UCLA had nine different players score goals. In addition to the four hat tricks, junior Kelly Ronimus scored twice for the Bruins. Rounding out the UCLA scoring with one goal apiece was senior Leslee Kaczmarek and freshmen Kodi Hill, Maddy McLaren and Alexa Tielmann.
The Bruins pitched a shutout in the first quarter and received five full strength goals, one each from five different players. Williams got the Bruins on the board at the 5:52 mark, followed by scores from Donohoe (4:32) and Tielmann (3:14). Hill made it 4-0 with 2:27 left in the first and McLaren ended the first quarter scoring with 32 seconds left to give the Bruins a 5-0 lead.
UCLA raced out to a 10-0 start with five more goals at full strength to open the second period. Naranjo scored back-to-back goals (7:35 and 7:10) to make it 7-0. Then Donohoe (6:40) and Williams (6:08) each scored their second goals of the game to make it 9-0. Ferraro scored her first goal of the game with 4:09 left in the second period to give the Bruins a 10-0 lead. Jordan Card scored the first for Cal Lutheran on a power play, the first 6-on-5 opportunity of the game with 3:49 to go. Ferraro scored her second straight for UCLA to end the scoring at the 2:41 mark to give the Bruins an 11-1 halftime lead.
Ronimus scored her first of the game to open the scoring in the third period (7:46) to put the Bruins up 12-1. Jane Galluzzi made it 12-2 with another power play goal for the Regals with 5:40 to go in the third period. But the Bruins ended the third with five unanswered goals to take a 17-2 lead into the fourth period.
Each team only managed one goal in the four quarter as the Bruins won the game, 18-3. Ferraro scored the Bruins' only power play goal (just two attempts) with 6:25 to go. Card scored her second of the game and the only goal at full strength for Cal Lutheran with 3:17 remaining.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sami Hill got the start and played the first period and just over half of the second quarter, picking up two saves. Freshman Alex Musselman played the rest of the game, also earning two stops. Kylee Tomasetti played the first half for Cal Lutheran and was credited with three saves for Cal Lutheran. Gina Merry played the second half and also made three stops for the Regals.
The Bruins return to action next weekend when they host UC Irvine on Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Center.
