No. 4 Arizona State Stuns No. 3 UCLA, 7-6

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 3 UCLA lost its MPSF-opener on Saturday, 7-6, at No. 4 Arizona State. Sophomore Emily Donohoe had two goals to lead the Bruins, which dropped to 16-3 overall and 0-1 in the MPSF. ASU improved to 12-3 overall and 1-0 in MPSF action.
UCLA got on the scoreboard first thanks to a close-range goal from Donohoe at the 3:15 mark of the first period. Arizona State was able to tie it up before the end of the first quarter on a score from Gao Ao (1:24) to end the first quarter tied at 1-1.
The Bruins turned up the heat on the Sun Devils in the second quarter, scoring three goals within two minutes to push the score to 4-1. Freshman Rachel Fattal scored with 3:55 to go in the second to make it 2-1. Then Giselle Naranjo made it 3-1 with a power play goal with 3:05 to go. Freshman Alexa Tielmann then gave the Bruins their largest lead of 4-1 with a score with 2:14 left in the first half. ASU capitalized on a Bruin exclusion with just over a minute left in the half with Alicia Brightwell scoring to end the scoring at 4-2, UCLA at the break.
The Sun Devils came back strong in the second half, making it 4-3 on a power play goal by Petra Pardi just outside the two-meter mark over two UCLA defenders with 6:21 left in the third. The Bruins answered with another goal by Donohoe to make it 5-3 at the 2:51 mark of the third. Pardi scored her second goal to pull the Devils within one on another 6-on-5 opportunity. Then with :11 remaining in the third, ASU forced a turnover and Anna Kertes sprinted half the length of the pool to score the tying goal with six seconds left, making it 5-5.
Arizona State would take the lead in the beginning of the fourth quarter as Pardi completed her hat trick on a cross-cage lob shot to give the Sun Devils a 6-5 lead 6:23 to go. Kertes widened the ASU lead with an exclusion goal to make it 7-5 with 4:05 remaining. Freshman India Forster netted her first goal on an Arizona State turnover near the net to pull the Bruins to within one at 7-6 with 2:00 left. The Bruins had a chance to rebound and score in the last minute of play, but the Devils defense forced a turnover and UCLA was unable to recover as time ran out.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sami Hill played the entire game in goal for the Bruins, picking up 11 saves. Redshirt freshman E.B. Keeve was credited with eight stops in the cage for ASU.
