WESTWOOD, Calif. - Two-time national collegiate champion UCLA (1996, 1997) dominated new conference opponent University of the Pacific (UOP), winning by a score of 18-5 in an MPSF matchup. Today's game marked the last home match for Bruin seniors Jenn Cady and Nicolle Payne.
UCLA was led in scoring by junior All-American Catharine von Schwarz and sophomore Erin Golaboski, each with three goals. Kristin Guerin, Carly Herrera, and Coralie Simmons added two points apiece. A total of eleven players notched goals for the Bruins. Payne, a three-time All-America goalkeeper, grabbed five saves in her last home game before yielding the net to Alison LaBonte, who tallied three saves.
No. 13 UOP, held to only one goal in the first three quarters, fired four shots into the net in the final period. The Tigers were led in scoring by sophomore Molly Smith, who netted two goals. Senior netkeeper Kenna Sasser had six saves before being relieved by Margaret Wynstra in the fourth quarter.
Today's victory increases UCLA's record to 18-1 overall, 6-0 in conference play. The Bruins have outscored their 1998 opponents 257-64. UCLA is 78-3 since the start of the 1996 season. With the loss today, UOP falls to 1-6 overall, 1-5 in MPSF action.
UCLA is on the road for the remainder of the season, with the next match on Friday, March 27, at UC Santa Barbara. The Bruins will return to Los Angeles May 8-10 for the Collegiate National Championships, to be hosted across town by USC. Postseason play begins on April 10 in Stockton with the MPSF Conference Tournament
