No. 3 UCLA Women's Water Polo Edged by No. 1 Stanford, 9-8

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team dropped a 9-8 decision at No. 1 Stanford on Friday evening at Avery Aquatic Center. Senior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen led the Bruins (20-4, 5-1 MPSF) with 12 saves in the MPSF contest.
Senior Anne Belden and Tanya Gandy and sophomore Priscilla Orozco led the Bruins with two goals each. UCLA also received one goal from sophomore Kelly Easterday and freshman Sarah Orozco. Stanford's Kira Hillman, Melissa Seidemann and Lauren Silver each scored one pair of goals for the Cardinal (21-1, 5-0 MPSF).
UCLA raced to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. The Bruins received one goal from Gandy on a 6-on-5 play and a second goal from Sarah Orozco.
Stanford got on the board with a goal in the second quarter from Hillman before Seidemann tied the contest, 2-2. UCLA regained the lead, 3-2, with a goal by Gandy on a 6-on-5 opportunity. Stanford tied the game, 3-3, before the end of the first half with a goal from Kelly Eaton.
The Bruins opened the third quarter with a goal from Priscilla Orozco on a 6-on-5 opportunity, before Stanford evened the game, 4-4, with a 6-on-5 goal from Jessica Steffens. After Easterday scored her lone goal of the day, Stanford answered with a 6-on-5 goal from Seidemann, knotting the margin at 5-5.
Both teams continued to trade goals, as Stanford took advantage of a 5-on-4 situation with a goal by Silver, handing the Cardinal a 6-5 lead. UCLA responded with a 6-on-5 goal from Priscilla Orozco, tying the game at 6-6. Stanford's Kim Krueger scored the eventual game-winning goal before the end of the third period, giving the Cardinal a 7-6 advantage.
Stanford pushed its margin to 8-6 with a goal from Silver at the 7:37 mark in the final quarter. Belden cut the Bruins' deficit to 8-7 with a goal with just 89 second remaining in the contest. Hillman's goal with 55 seconds to play handed Stanford a 9-7 lead. Belden's 6-on-5 goal with 35 seconds remaining sliced Stanford's lead to 9-8.
No. 3 UCLA returns to action against No. 2 USC on Saturday, April 11, in the Bruins' final regular-season contest. Game time at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Recreation Center is 1 p.m.
