SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The fifth-ranked San Diego State University women's water polo team lost its final regular season game of the season to the top-ranked UCLA Bruins, 7-4, at Bud Kearns Pool in Morley Field. The Aztecs move to 14-9 (5-4 MPSF) on the season while UCLA now stands at 17-1 (7-0 MPSF).
After falling behind 4-0 in the first half, the Aztecs bounced back in the third quarter behind consecutive goals from Melissa Brimmm, Nicole Garzon, Danielle Dabbaghian and Sara Hanneman to knot the score at four.
UCLA battled back in the fourth period on goals by Coralie Simmons and then two by Catherine von Schwarz to complete the scoring for the match.
San Diego State held the Bruins to their lowest scoring total of the season. In only one other game this season - a 9-8 loss to Cal - had the Bruins failed to score in double-digits. The Aztecs were led in net by sophomore Curran Teigan who registered a game-high eight saves. UCLA three-time All-American and US National goalie Nicolle Payne finished the contest with four saves.
The Aztecs now begin preparation for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Stockton, CA., where they will likely meet up with the Bruins again. The MPSF Championships take place from April 10-12.
