LOS ANGELES - Senior KK Clark scored the Bruins' only goal as No. 1 Stanford spoiled No. 2 UCLA's "Senior Night" with an 8-1 victory at Spieker Aquatics Center in the regular season final on Saturday evening.
Stanford (21-1, 7-0) clinched the MPSF regular season crown and the No. 1 seed at next week's MPSF Tournament.
The Cardinal jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first three minutes of the match with goals from freshman Ashley Grossman (6:47) and sophomore Kaley Dodson (6:04) and a power-play goal by freshman Kiley Neushul at the 5:14 mark of the first quarter.
KK Clark scored an exclusion goal for UCLA (18-3, 5-2) with 48 seconds left, cutting Stanford's lead to 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
UCLA and Stanford split a pair of regular-season matches this season. But the Cardinal scored five straight goals to win the rubber match.
In the second period, Dodson scored her second goal of the match, the only goal of the period, on a power play with 7:14 left. Bruin senior goalkeeper Caitlin Dement recorded three saves in the period as Stanford took a 4-1 lead into the break.
The Cardinal dominated the third quarter, scoring four goals with both teams at full strength. Neushul scored her second of the match (7:42) to put Stanford up 5-1 with junior Cassie Churnside scoring her only goal of the match (6:08) to push the lead to 6-1. Junior Victoria Kennedy made it 7-1 at the 4:44 mark of the third. Then Neushul completed her hat trick on a counter attack after the Bruins failed to score on a power play, ending the scoring at 8-1 at the 1:34 mark of the third period.
Both teams were scoreless in the fourth quarter, with Dement picking up another three stops in the cage for UCLA. The Bruins also had a total of four shots hit the crossbar or posts in the second half as UCLA went 1-for-11 on power-play opportunities for the match.
Dement ended the match with nine saves, as did Stanford goalie Kate Baldoni. Freshman Emily Dorst played in goal for the Cardinal in the fourth quarter, making one stop.
