UCLA Women's Water Polo Wins 2012 MPSF Tournament Title

STANFORD, Calif. - KK Clark scored with 46 seconds left in the first of two overtime periods to lead the No. 2-seeded UCLA women's water polo team past No. 1-seed Stanford, 8-7, in the MPSF Tournament's championship match at Avery Aquatic Center on Sunday.
UCLA (21-3) secured its second MPSF Tournament title in the last three years.
In addition, the Bruins snapped Stanford's 37-game home winning streak at Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal's last home loss took place Feb. 7, 2009, in a 12-10 overtime loss to USC.
Becca Dorst led the Bruins with three goals in a game that featured seven lead changes. The game was deadlocked, 7-7, at the end of regulation, prompting two three-minute overtime periods.
Stanford's Kaley Dodson and Kiley Neushul each scored two goals for the host Cardinal.
Sunday's victory helped UCLA secure the MPSF's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship, to be played at San Diego State from May 11-13. The complete NCAA Tournament field will be revealed Monday at 5 p.m. online at ncaa.com.
Stanford (23-2) led UCLA, 3-2, after the first quarter and owned a slim 5-4 advantage at halftime.
The Bruins battled back in the third quarter, as Sebenaler (6:39) and Dorst (1:16) scored consecutive goals to put UCLA ahead, 6-5. The Bruins held Stanford scoreless in the third period and entered the fourth quarter with a 6-5 cushion.
Stanford's Dodson evened the game, 6-6, early in the final quarter of regulation. She added her second goal of the match with 3:53 to play, giving the Cardinal a 7-6 advantage.
Dorst added the equalizer with 2:42 to play in regulation, knotting the championship match at 7-7.
UCLA's Caitlin Dement and Stanford's Kate Baldoni each recorded 12 saves in goal.
The Bruins have gone 2-2 this season against Stanford. The Cardinal earned a 9-5 victory at the Stanford Invitational on Feb. 5. UCLA defeated Stanford, 5-4, at the UC Irvine Invitational on Feb. 26, and the Cardinal handed the Bruins an 8-1 loss in both teams' final regular-season match on April 21 at UCLA.
UCLA has earned its eighth consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament (2005-2012). The Bruins have won 11 national titles, including seven NCAA Championships (since the sport moved to NCAA status in 2001).
