UCLA, Cal Advance to Women's Water Polo Title Game

Stanford, Hawai'i to play for third; USC, UCSB to play for fifth.

LOS ANGELES - Top-seed UCLA beat No. 4 Hawai'i and No. 3 seed California upset No. 2 Stanford at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday to advance to the championship game of the Women's Water Polo National Collegiate Championships. The title game will be played on Sunday (May 10) at 3 p.m. at USC.

UCLA (34-1), the two-time defending national champions which beat Cal for both titles, defeated Hawai'i (29-11), 10-3, behind three goals from junior Coralie Simmons and a stingy defense led by senior goalie Nicolle Payne. The Bruins led 6-0 after three periods and led 8-0 before the Rainbows scored with 4:35 to play. Junior goalie Lila Fraser had 11 saves for Hawai'i.

California (27-5), which handed UCLA its only loss this year, beat Stanford (28-6), 8-4. It was the second consecutive win for the Bears over the Cardinal in the national semifinals. Stanford led 3-2 after the first period but California tied the game at the half, 4-4. Sophomore driver Colette Glinkowski broke the tie with her second goal of the game with 1:12 to go in the third period. Cal senior two-meter player Alisa vonHartitzsch, an All-American and the 1997 National Collegiate Championships MVP, took over in the fourth period, scoring three consecutive goals, giving her four for the game, to ice the win for the Bears. Stanford sophomore driver Suze Gardner scored three times for the Cardinal.

Stanford will face Hawai'i on Sunday in the third-place game.

he fifth-place game on Sunday will pit No. 6 USC (21-16) against No. 8 UC Santa Barbara (17-17). The Women of Troy defeated No. 7 UMass (30-5), 8-4, to advance. Junior goalie Bernice Orwig posted 14 saves, including eight in the final period, and junior driver Kellie Clark had two goals to lead USC. Seven players scored for the Women of Troy in the win.

UC Santa Barbara posted the first upset of the tournament with a 9-8 sudden-death win over No. 5 San Diego State (22-14). The Gauchos led 6-4 midway through the third period, but the Aztecs scored once in the third and once in the fourth to send the game into overtime. Both teams scored twice in the first overtime period and were shutout in the second, sending the game to sudden death. There, Gaucho sophomore Kara Watkins scored the game-winner after only 43 seconds. UMass and San Diego State will play in the seventh-place game.

No. 10 Michigan (32-8-1), behind two goals from freshman Melissa Karjala, beat No. 11 Indiana, 4-2, to advance to the ninth-place game at 9 a.m. The Wolverines will face No. 9 Maryland (28-11), which, thanks in part to four Katie Vitali goals, beat No. 12 Princeton, 6-4.

In the 11th-place game, the last game played on Saturday, Princeton beat Indiana, 5-4.

The national championships conclude on Sunday (May 10) at 9 a.m. (PDT).
