LOS ANGELES - The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team begins its MPSF schedule at No. 9 San Diego State on Saturday afternoon. Game time at Aztec Aquaplex is slated for 12 p.m. The Bruins have opened their season by winning seven of their first eight matches.

Bruins Cruise Past Cal Baptist
KK Clark and Hannah Sebenaler each scored three goals to lead UCLA past Cal Baptist, 11-5, last Saturday in the Bruins' first home contest of the season. UCLA claimed a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back against the visiting Lancers. In all, seven players scored for UCLA. Goalkeeper Caitlin Dement recorded 10 saves in the cage for the fourth time this season.
KK Among MPSF's Top Scorers
Through matches played Sunday, Feb. 12, senior KK Clark leads UCLA with 21 goals and ranks fourth among MPSF field players with a 2.63 goals per match average. The senior from Atherton, Calif., has scored in all eight matches, netting two goals or more in seven games. She earned MPSF Player of the Week honors after scoring 10 goals at the Michigan Invitational the weekend of Jan. 21-22.
Bruins Stingy on Defense
Backed by third-year starting goalkeeper Caitlin Dement, UCLA's defense has surrendered 5.25 goals per game, the lowest average among eight MPSF programs. The Bruins have limited their opposition to five goals or fewer in six of the team's first eight matches. UCLA allowed a season-low three goals in wins over California and Michigan at the Stanford Invitational.
UCLA's Other Key Scorers
Sophomores Becca Dorst and Kelly Ronimus are tied for second on the team with nine goals each. Seniors Sarah Orozco and Hannah Sebenaler follow with six goals each, through UCLA's first eight matches. Sebenaler scored a career-high three goals in UCLA's 11-5 win over Cal Baptist at Spieker Aquatics Center last Saturday.
Early Season Tournaments
The Bruins opened the 2012 season the weekend of Jan. 21-22 with three consecutive victories at the Michigan Invitational. Two weeks later, UCLA returned to action at the Stanford Invitational, where the Bruins finished second to tournament host Stanford. UCLA earned victories against Hawaii and California on Feb. 5. The next day, UCLA defeated Michigan, 10-3, and lost to Stanford, 9-5.
Looking Down the Road
UCLA competes in the UC Irvine Invitational next weekend, playing four games in two days (Feb. 25-26). The Bruins will return to the L.A. area for a March 3 tilt at USC and will host back-to-back matches against San Jose State (March 10) and Arizona State (March 17). The games against USC, San Jose State and Arizona State all count toward this season's MPSF standings.
2011 Season at a Glance
UCLA posted a 26-7 record in 2011, finishing in a three-way tie for third place in the MPSF standings with Hawaii and USC. The Bruins entered the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed before finishing second to California in that tournament. UCLA finished third at the NCAA Tournament, defeating crosstown rival USC, 6-5.
Brooks on Deck for Year Three
Third-year head coach Brandon Brooks has compiled a 55-16 record as UCLA's head coach. He played goalkeeper for the UCLA men's water polo team from 1999-2002. Brooks helped UCLA capture the 1999 and 2000 NCAA titles. He also played for the USA National Team in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, leading Team USA to a silver medal in 2008 in Beijing.
