Goldring Leads Women's Cross Country To Second-Place Showing At UCI Invite
Sept. 6, 2008
The UCLA women's cross country season started the 2008 season on a high note Saturday as they finished second at the UC Irvine Invitational with four athletes finishing in the top-20. Led by freshman Katja Goldring who was seventh overall (18:00.10), the Bruin women saw the youth of their team step up for a fine team performance.
"I felt that this group did a nice job of running as a team today during the early stages of the race," said head coach Eric Peterson. "It's obviously impressive and encouraging to see a true freshman like Katja perform like she did today. She held back nicely through the first mile then really pushed her way into that top seven finish.
"It's always great to see three freshmen finish so high. We know we have a young team, but to see them perform well against a solid UC Irvine team is good to see. We will use this to build our confidence and move on to our next meet in Hawaii.
Having four kids in the top-20, two of which are in their first collegiate race ever, is a good statement for the future of our program.
