No. 23 UCLA Falls to No. 9 Wisconsin in Straight Sets

October 17, 2025 | Women's Volleyball

MADISON, Wisc. โ€“ย The No.23-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team fell to No. 9 Wisconsin in straight sets on Friday night inside UW Field House.
ย
Set scores were 15-25, 20-25, 21-25.
ย
In a ranked Big Ten clash, UCLA (10-7, 4-3) struggled to settle into a rhythm offensively, hitting just .062 as a team. Wisconsin (13-2, 6-1 Big Ten) posted a .267 team hitting percentage, fueled by Mimi Colyer's efficient 16-kill effort (.324).
ย
Marianna Singletary was the leading point-scorer for the Bruins, putting down eight kills and five blocks to finish with 11.5 points.ย
ย
Cheridyn Leverette tallied nine kills while Brooklyn Briscoe and Maggie Li recorded four kills apiece. Kate Duffey handed out 25 assists at the setter position and Lola Schumacher led UCLA defensively with 13 digs.
ย
Wisconsin opened the match with a 12-4 lead, sparked by four early kills from Colyer and a seven-point run that widened the gap. Despite three kills from Leverette and some significant contributions from UCLA's middle blockers, Briscoe and Singletary, who combined for four kills in the set, the Bruins struggled to find offensive rhythm and hit .000 in the frame. Wisconsin maintained control throughout, hitting .391 en route to a 25-14 first-set win.
ย
UCLA opened the second set with a strong block from Singletary and Kong, but Wisconsin quickly responded to build a 9-4 lead. Li added two kills to keep the Bruins within striking distance, and Singletary's overpass kill capped a 3-0 run that narrowed the gap to 19-16, prompting a Wisconsin timeout. Another 3-0 surge, sparked by a block from Briscoe and Anastasija Ivkovic, brought UCLA within two at 22-20. Despite the late push, Wisconsin regrouped and closed the set with a 3-0 run of its own to secure the frame, 25-20.
ย
Set three began with a tight back-and-forth battle, highlighted by a powerful kill from Leverette and three early blocks from Singletary that kept UCLA competitive. The Bruins strung together three straight points to even the score at 13-13, but Wisconsin responded with a 4-0 run to pull ahead 20-16. Despite Singletary's standout performance, finishing the set with five total blocks, the Badgers held firm down the stretch to claim the set and secure the match victory.
ย
UCLA will wrap up the weekend at Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. (PT). The match will be available for viewing on B1G+.
